Energy Conservation Efforts
1. Earth Hour - Earth Hour was a project promoted in the weekly newsletter sent out to all Gunston students, faculty and parents. This initiative encouraged students to switch off all lights and electronic devices on a Saturday night. This project came with rewards if a certain amount of students participated, backed by teachers and administrators. This project was a safe and convenient way to save energy in our community and globally and teaches the students at Gunston that they can make a change. Approximately 50 students from all grade levels (9-12) participated on March 25, 2017.
2. Energy Conservation Stickers - In order to encourage conservation of energy, students attached 30 stickers to light switches throughout the school that read “Turn Off the Lights.” These stickers were specifically placed in areas that did not have automatic light sensors to switch off and save energy when not being used. These stickers remind students and faculty to make sure to power down when they are not using and to think about the impact of unused electricity.
3. Peak Energy Days - An email was sent by Grafton Howard (grade 11), the Green Council President, in March 2018 asking Gunston Headmaster John Lewis to consider more safe environmental practices. During the summer, when students are off campus, Grafton suggested limiting power usage for air conditioning on high temperature days. Gunston later adopted these energy saving measures in the summer of 2018. Email included below:
